How Long Does Microblading Last?

Updated: May 19, 2023

If your eyebrows are lackluster and you’re disappointed with regular treatments, there’s another option. Microblading, or eyebrow tattooing, is a form of permanent makeup with fantastic, long-lasting results.

You won’t have to go into a tattoo shop to get them done, though. If your skincare professional is licensed and board-certified, they can provide this service too!

Microblading is a form of cosmetic tattooing. At Cosmic Beauty Studio, we utilize machine work that caters to the client’s desired look. Machine work is less traumatic to the skin, can last longer, and can be done on all skin types, opposed to traditional mircoblading done with a blade that cuts the skin.

The real question is how long do permanent makeup treatments last? Let’s find out!

Factors that influence how long your microblading results last

Generally speaking, microblading lasts anywhere from 1 to 3 years. Eight weeks after your initial microblading session, a follow-up appointment perfects your brows with minor adjustments. Factors that affect the treatment include things like skin type, age, lifestyle, and aftercare immediately following your treatment.

What skin types need more frequent touch ups?

If you’ve been blessed with a normal to dry skin type, this is a perfect treatment for you! With the right aftercare, your brows will be perfect for years to come.

With the type of permanent makeup provided at Cosmic Beauty Studio, even oily skin can have great, long-lasting results!

Other than that, they’ll fade faster if you’re a frequent smoker or iron deficient. And if you don’t protect yourself from sun exposure, you’ll see the results. Make sure you always apply a daily SPF to protect your brows, and overall skin health.

So, if you’re investing time and money into the process, quit smoking, wear a hat, and reapply your SPF every 2 hours while exposed to the sun.

How closely did you follow aftercare during the healing process?

Another factor when it comes to your newly tattooed brows is aftercare. Even if you’re a regular tattoo client, microblading has a different healing process. Your permanent makeup artist will include an aftercare kit in with your treatment. And they’ll expect you to follow their advice.

Trust the process! It will take up to six weeks before you’re fully healed. Then, the true color shows through. Choosing not to follow your artist's advice may result in poor retention.

How to get the longest results from microblading

If you’re the type of person who likes to follow the rules, you’ll get the most from this treatment. A few things will prolong the effect and let you enjoy your brows as long as possible!

Apply SPF daily to protect your treatment

UVA and UVB light fade all tattoos; your brows are no exception. Using sunscreen, either as part of your foundation or as an add-on, is so important. Without it, you’ll see the color fade fast!

Avoid laser or chemical treatments

Lasers can break up pigment under the skin and cause immediate fading. This isn’t to say you can’t receive laser facials, just let your esthetician know beforehand so they can avoid treating that area.

Chemical peels resurface your skin and can fade your microbladed eyebrows. Creams and serums containing retinol, AHA or BHA, or glycolic acid promote cell turnover, which will cause them to fade faster. As long as they aren’t applied directly to your eyebrows, there should be no problem!

Go back for touch ups when recommended by your artist

Even if you’ve done everything right, sometimes, microbladed brows fade. After the 8-week follow up appointment, your esthetician may recommend a touch-up at around a year to two years. Some people enjoy results for many years after the initial appointment, but it varies. If you follow their suggested schedule, you’ll enjoy your sleek look as long as possible!
